Decrypting 64 arts of Kamasutra (Part 1) - Pure Veg

Warning : If you have come here anticipating any non-vegetarian stuffs like kamasutra sex positions , you can close the page.This has only vegetarian stuff and discusses regarding the 64 arts that is in the part one, chapter 3 of vatsyayana's kamasutra.


This blog-post has Tamil, Sanskrit in Devanagiri(two liturgical languages of India) and English words. Those who know to read all three is best to interpret the real juice. I have taken care to see if just a combination of (devanagiri,english) or (tamil,english)  or only English is known , it should not be a much loss.Let me know in case of non understanding of any part.



Below is the list of 64 arts that are mentioned in Sanskrit text of kamasutra that one must search and learn in their life time  (ஆய கலைகள் 64 ).

There is an argument that this is for the courtesans to learn so that they can effectively go up the ladder inside a brothel/court.But this 64 art forms are said to mastered by lord Krishna.The time of occurrence of Mahabharata is still disputed but mostly agreed that centuries well before Jesus Christ was a kid. Saying this , i can understand that this list exists in some other text/practice  and vatsyayana  has adapted it for his textbook. I don't know where is the original one!! I was browsing through the lists in various sites and seeing them i can understand that not all of them are feminine stuff.Most of them are gender neutral and some of them are feminine or i should i say , over centuries practiced mostly by female.Also i feel that most of the arts are misinterpreted by many .So I am presenting you  my interpretation of the text.I was curious to see how much i have done through those and also want to list out what are the plans i should make to learn them.



1. गीतम् /பாடல்


This is an easy one to decrypt.Well , i am zero at Singing. All i have done is sing in a "paatukku paatu" during  college days. I had an audience of 1000+.That was really funny. Don't know how many people in the crowd grumbled -"Who the hell gave the mic to him". Neither i have learnt carnatic music(which is more prevalent as a learning than other forms like hindustani etc) as this is not a practice in our community, nor i have had any inclination for learning it.But my grandmother , I still remember , used to sing hymns to god daily.She would take a tumbler full of water and pour little vibhoothi into it and she sings a lot of songs in Tamil  praising the god daily for 1 hour at least.I just remember some lines like "ஆடு மேய்க்கும் அருமை கிருஷ்ணா  blah blah blah ". I have to relearn the Sanskrit and Tamil bhakthi verses that i have learnt in school and need to put more time to learn more in furure.Anyways , i love to hear songs, just like anyone else !!


2. वाधम्/இசைக்கருவி


ZERO in playing musical instruments !!! Once my friend bought a piano and was storing it in my room. I used to roll my fingers on it and make all stupid noises.This is again one thing which i feel envy like when someone plays guitar  or violin.I have bought a flute and many books,CDs on learning it. But haven't started on this yet !! Hope to start that soon.Regarding the instruments more prevalent in tamilnadu like nathaswaram , thavil, melam, thaarai ,thappatai  etc i feel these instruments , though not so easy to learn , are blend into the life with their involvement in important life deciding occasions like marriages ,functions and deaths.Hence they comes throughout life.


3. नृत्यम्/நடனம்


ZERO! Man i think everything will be zero. Anyways , let me proceed with hope !! Prolonged obesity has blocked me from doing this,dancing. Due to fear of others' mocking , i have never tried it.Have done some funny dancing with music playing in background in a skit , but that is again for others to laugh seeing it , which in deed happened :)



4. आलेख्यम् /ஓவியம்


Viola!! Here i score. I am interested in painting.Saying this doesn't mean i am an expert in it , but i am zero in it either.Once one of my colleague  mocked me that i am just self priding in this. I just called a kid and drew a simple elephant. The kid identified that it is an elephant.Hence the proof :) When i was a child i was interested in painting and i do paint well. But this has faded over time and i have never preserved the paintings i did . Time and again i would go to the nearby store and purchase a drawing note to restart it. Somehow, i have not restated it yet full fledged!!


5. विशेषकच्छेधम् / முகச்சித்திரம்


I score again !!! I have done face painting . Here is the one i did for a skit in st.john's stadium , Bangalore.Given an opportunity i would like to improvise on this skill.





6. तण्डुलकुसुमवलिविकारा:/வண்ணக்கோலங்கள் ,பூக்கோலம் ,மாக்கோலம்

तण्डुल- rice,  कुसुम - flower ,மா - flour கோலம் - rangoli


Drawing of Rangoli designs with rice flour, flowers is mostly done by women in India.Don't know whether centuries ago men did the same !! I have only seen my mom draw the 'Pulli kolams' in front of my home.But i have no idea about this. May be i can try some time in future and learn from my mom.


7. पुष्पास्तरणम्/ பூப்படுக்கை


The price list at which the flowers are selling nowadays, it is possible to only by one rose or max one garland.If you wanna make bed full of flowers then  one has to pay a huge cost to do so.Until i have seen this practice is more prevalent for carrying a dead body  to the cremation ground.May be that  it might have been used for many occasions and over the period of time the practice vanished from other usages while this usage still pertains.I have seen pictures of my colleague's kids standing amid tulip  plantations in Seattle.Wish to go to such locations.Anyways i always have a peculiar idea that comes up in my mind frequently. Its so silly and blasphemous to share in a public blog. Yet , i am going ahead. I sometimes think , why not the first night's bed is not made full of roses !!! I am planning to do it.


8. दशनवसनाड्गरागः / ஆடை மற்றும் பல் அலங்காரம்

 दशन- tooth.वसन - garment.

I clearly cant understand what do they mean by  Art of decorating tooth and body with cloth.The first one is dentist's work..Decorating the body ??? Is it by wearing designer cloths? If that is so , its only after the age of 21,after i started earning, that i have started to buy my own cloths with more designs i liked.This is a continual process and cant separate any future plan kind of stuff .Regarding decoration the tooth , who the hell has asked to color the tooth.I have heard about hair coloring. If people in ancient India have practiced tooth coloring , then its really crazy.Anyways , i can do periodic teeth de-coloration when my teeth gets yellow, but will never do a tooth coloring stuff!!!


9. मणिभूमिकाकर्म/மணிமண்டபம்


 The Art of making dolls and stages with gems is indeed a imagination capturing art. In Tamil its called manimandapam.Many rulers and wealthy people of past Indian kingdoms have built manimandapams to live around with their queens.


There is an good kannadasan song that i can remember in Tamil


பளிங்கினால் ஒரு  மாளிகை
பருவத்தால்  மணி  மண்டபம்
உயரத்தில்  ஒரு  கோபுரம்
உன்னை  அழைக்குது வா 

 This song is to woo the lover saying "I have a palace made of  crystal and an excellent arena full of gems with a skyscraper.All these are calling you!!'



But nowadays a  memorial house is christened as manimandapam.i don't know how this evolved like this !!


First let me build a house , then i will think about manimandapam :).Build just a 1000 sq ft house in today's world is a Himalayan task.If i have to build a arena full of gems nowadays, then i have to loot :P


10. शयनकचनम् / பள்ளியறை

 शयन- sleep

The art of Building cots and beds according to seasons  is actually irrelevant today.Those days , when the type of housing was mostly mud , it was important to have a cot made of woolen for winter and cot made of hay during summer.These days this is mostly  irrelevant.But decorating the bedroom with elegant woods and stylish decors is of course an art!! 11. उदकवाद्यम्/நீரூற்று

 उदक - water , वाद्यम् - instrument

When they say Jalatharangini , the water instrument that makes noise , i strongly doubt they are mentioning any instrument that is played by hand.I suppose its the riverside shores or  the waterfalls or most closely the water fountains.Making love in waterfall might have been possible for ancient Indians.Nowadays the count of waterfalls is less and its thronged with visitors as soon as it is open!!.  Building a fountain in the house is of course gives a great ambiance to the house.I was browsing through some architecture books that have exclusive designs of fountains across the world in landmark , Bangalore. I was so impressed that i want to make such one elegant fountain in my future house.Its soothes the mind of the people who are residing in it  and also gives a good impression of the lifestyle to the visitors to the house.Another point to take when building a house.


12. उदकाघातः / நீர்த்தடாகம்

 उदक - water. घात- bang


 The act Sprinkling water as art!! Have these guys directed some movies or what ? Like the present day directors asking the hero to make omlette in the heroine's navel , should the guy too sprinkle water there ??? I suspect this is to deal with the water sports .Of  course water sports and its intimate contact can trigger the love chemicals!!! So building a swimming pool or bath house is what they could have meant!! Good one to note again while building my house!! But i don't know whether i can conduct parties like Berlusconi  's 'BUNGA BUNGA' :) .Man , if  i keep on adding this , then i think i have to buy a huge plot!!!


13. चित्राश्चयोगाः/ உடை அணி இயல்

चित्र - (விசித்திர/different) आश्च- (ஆச்சர்யம்/surprising )


The art of roaming by wearing various attires is what called today as fashion.There is no need for me to explain this.Everyone knows wearing fashionable cloths is key to present yourself better.Fashion shows were just a parade organized in 'rues de paris'.Imported to America and then  spread to the other parts of the world through the Americanization process , fashion shows are held even in remote parts of India nowadays.I want to see Europe and Eastern world more regarding this.Want to see how the Japanese , French , Italians etc carry themselves in their life.Want to live in those places and see the dressings of people in all aspects of life rather than watching any such shows.I want the real juice.Not the artificial stuff!!! This task might take nearly my life time!!


14. माल्यग्रथनविकल्पाः /பூமாலைதொடுத்தல்


माल्य- garland. ग्रथन- knitting विकल्प - fancy


Making different kinds and styles of flower garlands is mostly seen in marriage halls,party functions etc.I don't see people garlanding their spouse in day to day life.Only during special occasions this occurs.The politicians get garlands from people who want something from them.May be this is mentioning about the garland that is made for god! Like senthan amuthan of ponniyin selvan or aandal , i too would love to collect flowers from the backyard and make it to a garland for presenting to god. Well , if i am doing that , who will do my job and how will i get my salary.So all i can do is , think my 'job' as god and 'work' as garland.


15. शेखरपीडयोजनम्  /பூச்சூடல்

 शेखर - crown

The Art of making flower crowns and flower head caps and turbans is , i think , mainly a courting ritual.Nice to know!! These guys had free supply of flowers in tons it seems.Women in India keep flowers in their head.I have seen it mostly in South.Almost the entire female horde in south India do it as part of their everyday life.They say , this is to mask the bad odor that body emits, specially in tropical regions where the sun scorches the skin, so that the males don't hesitate when they go near the female! In contrary , they fell for the fragrance!  So this is one of the art that is practiced more by female gender over generations.


16. नेपथ्यप्रयोगाः  / ஆடை கலைதல்

नेपथ्य  means changing room and प्रयोगाः: means play/experiment.


Again this must be some courting ritual in/before fore-playing in changing room.May also be that he is describing about fore-play of removing the cloths of each other. So this translates to 'Art of Removing Cloths' and this is an art huh !!! This blog is a veggie !!! So you can Google more to know about this.Good to know.


17. कर्णपत्रभंगा /காதணி

कर्ण - ear

Ear piercing is practiced by Indians through generations.When the child is at least two years old , irrespective of the gender , the child's ears are pierced and a ornament , according to wealth of the person , of gold or silver is worn.The woman of India fancy themselves in wearing designer earrings.Nowadays , during the last two decade, we can see more Indian men wearing earrings. As like any Indian child , my ear piercing was done in front of the deity of my lineage(kula saamy). But that's an usual ritual.Until now , i haven't experimented with earrings.I have to start experimenting with this soon.


18. गन्धयुक्तिः / வாசனை திரவியம்

गन्ध - smell , युक्तिः - usage

Making and Usage of perfume is undoubtedly an art. The entire world knows that.A good smell is always an attractive force to lure the opposite for both sexes.Too much of this , i have seen , is very offensive.There are some women  who use perfumes heavily. So when they cross by , it smells like hell.Right amount of usage is a must and thus its an art. To be true by heart , i didn't use perfumes  much until i started to work.Instead , In India there is a practice of using talcum powder which makes the face more whitish and also gives a smell. Again this usage is more prevalent in rural areas. Somehow , i have always refrained from using talcum powder.I never liked it. I need to experiment on the aromas more.


19. भूषणयोजनम्/அணிகலன்கள்

 भूषण - Ornament


The Art of wearing ornaments is again not new to India nor to any civilization in the world.I have always disliked any ornamental extra fitting to be attached to my body.But  i have seen many guys wearing gold chain and rings in order to show their wealthiness and subsequently send a signal for the opposite sex.The bride is usually  decorated with ornaments during her marriage.The women folks in India are crazy about golden ornaments.Being brought up in a goldsmith area, i know it first hand.Nowadays, attending a function with the spouse in the best dress and best ornaments is a prestige issue for many.The accessories have in fact taken a different shape like goggles, watches , shoes for the uber-metro sexual man/woman.I have seen the visible difference.Just ask a man/woman , irrespective of how charming he/she might be , to walk in a casual dress along side with a guy/girl with all the said above accessories.Most of the opposite sex eye balls will be on the  one with extra fittings.Even if a good looking girl comes with a not so charming girl but with a Goggle, a sexy tag-line in across the chest, fine finished half pants and a blood colored lipstick , most of the eye balls will be on the second one.This is natural and we have to accept it.Indeed art of wearing ornaments is important in the lifestyle.I will stick on to the metro sexual style rather than the ancient styles of gold ornaments.But these are costlier nowadays than the one time investment like gold.


20. ऐन्द्रजालाः /  மாயக்கள்வன்



The magician or juggler is what vatsyayana means by this! Lord Krishna at his best.I suppose , this art of magic could have been practiced for amusing the opposite sex as a part of courting ritual.I envy the peacock.It has a very simple courting ritual of dancing! What and all a human has to do !! I don't know any magic stuffs.Not even taking a rabbit out of my pant pocket.The juggler aspect is what i like much. That one , i have seen in reality.How well a man can juggle his life , by being a good husband and at the same time flirting with other women. Same is a woman , who acts as if obedient and loyal to her Boyfriend but the bitch unleashes the tail once at his absence.This is the theme of the high TRP reality show Emotional Atyaachar.But it deals with the cheater getting trapped.But the art is to juggle successfully.Not to drop the ball while juggling. By juggling the life , one satisfies with him/herself with diversity.Juggling the balls (life)is not that easy.Need to practise and with perfection.A small slip will make to loose all your balls at once.



21. कौचुमाराश् च योगा / குசுமார தந்திரம்.

The Art of Erotic talk and behavior has been discussed in many books across centuries in India.One of the books that westerners got impressed is kamasutra.But there are many other writings mentioned in some Purana and poems , that eventually we have lost / not yet found.kamasutra is just a drop of the rain that we have lost over times, i believe.If you don't  know this info , let me tell you that the YOGA that is prevalent all over the world , is said to be first accounted ( or the latest texts we have got ) by 'Yoga Sutras of Patanjali'.A tamil scholar , tirumular , has written that patanjali came to chidambaram(a town in the kaveri basin) and learnt/discussed these from four yogis.Similarly , vatsyayana , i think , has written a summary for the text that contained detailed stuffs elsewhere.One such is kusumara's book. There are some other author's names that also mentioned in texts.

To name a few :நந்தி தேவர்,வேதகேது,பாப்ரவியாகாரிகர்,
சாராயனர்,கோதகமுகர்,கோனர்தியர் ,
கோனிகபுத்திரம்,தத்தகர்,சுவர்னாபர்

So until and unless we discover all theese , i cant explain this art that vatsyayana has put forth. I dont want to assume anything and decrypt some thing that is irrelevant.This art alone , is still undecrypted in this post.

22. हस्तलाघवम/  களவியில்  கை

हस्त -hand  लघव - soothing (using)


Many website say that it is art of making items in hands disappear but i strongly doubt that.I belive the meaning is a pure non-vegetarian stuff.I can very well grasp what vatsyayana is meaning by this. As i have promised to keep the blog vegetarian , i cant explain this in detail and i leave it to the capability of the reader to interpret the sanskrit explanation and the more explicit tamil meaning for the understanding.This is an art that every man/woman should know to lead a better relationship.And i should also know it in future.I will make every effort to be better at this.



23. विचित्रशाकयूषक्ष्यविकारक्रिया / சமையல் கலை


विचित - Different, शाक - vegetable , यूष - soup   , क्रिया - to do


There was a good line i remember from the film omkara "आदमी   के  दिल  का  रास्ता  उसके  पेट  से  होकर  जाता है". i am not a physician but i have 'experience as a human' in my kitty.I very well know that eating good food and keeping yourself healthy is directionally proportional to Dopamine and Serotonin level. Your dopamine and serotonin levels are directionally proportional to your good mood and well being.Good mood is directionally proportional to your effect on your environment.Many websites translate this art as "Art of making various flour dishes" but i strongly believe , vatsyayana has meant more generally about the art of cooking with natural vegetables.I am not a vegetarian yet. I tried to be , but due to my habit of eating meat from childhood , i am not able to switch to it that easy.But yet , eating vegetable can go along with eating meat na!I need to adjust the proportions of veggie stuff to be more and non-veggie to less! SO , i will try to reduce my non veg (I cant eliminate easily) and add more vegetable. So this is an art of cooking and eating good food , i believe :)


24. पानकरसरागासवयोजनम  / மது

पानक - beverage ,  रस - fluid with aroma


Mama mia!!! my favorite topic .Art of making various drinks, wines and liquors,Wine-making / tasting (;) to be precise, is an art that has to be mastered in deed. Nowadays we have corporations churning out wine/liquor  bottles  in huge quantity.If i want one , i can drive to the nearby supermarket or wine shop , grab one and have the same.Or go to a nearby pub and drink until i can empty my pocket.But these didn't exist in those days. Saying this, i am not demeaning that wine-making is new after industrial age.'SOMA' making has been practiced by Indians for thousands of years.But to non-industrialization of this , it was confined to a particular sect or class of people.The most important fact that has to be noted here is : most significant side effects of alcohol is reduced inhibition. Reduced inhibitions can lead to an increase in sexual behavior.Due to the vegetarian plight of the blog that i have taken to maintain , please refer the link Alcohol and sex for further details.


Long term effect of chronic usage of alchohol is of course harmfull.There is a good saying in tamil 'அளவுக்கு மீறினால் அமுதமும் நஞ்சு'.The meaning is : Anything that exceed limit , even if it is amrith ( A food that gives immortality) is a lethal killer.So using this for precise usage is the smart way of enjoying life :) .I have seen 150 year old wines in a shop in San Francisco.The cost the shopkeeper ( whom i befriended by being a frequent customer ) told me were himalayan.Anyways ,  i currently store two wine bottles that i bought from san francisco (Each 7 year old).I am planning to store it until another 10 years and open it on some special occasion then!! So i score heavily here !!! Wat u say ?



25. सूचीवानकर्माणि /  சரிகைவேலை


सूचीकर्मन् - embroidery


The Art of embroidery cloth !! I dont know to make embroidary cloth ! Seriously , i dont belive i can learn it easily . But i know how to buy them :). My mom has an affliation for buying sarees with high emroidary work.I have seen this habit to exist in almost all parts of india. The unique the embrodary of the saree, more is the prestige of the women in a marraige gathering.This rule holds good for the male gender too.The difference between a 'pattu vetti' and a normal 'vetti' signifies the richness that one has and distinguished him from the normal ones.The 'jarikai' in a silk saree , the wider it is , the more proud the women are to wear it.These are the popular varieties of sarees i could take from variuos sites - Banarasi silk sarees,Mysore silk sarees,Baluchari saree,Tanchoi sarees,Kanchipuram sarees,Bandhni sarees,Calcutta sarees,Kota sarees,Chikan sarees,Venkatagiri sarees.The kurtas with high embroidery work are more adorned more by young men nowadays  than dhoti for the same reason.The use of embroidary signifies the rich difference. I have worn dhoti's with embroidary but somehow the habit of wearing western cloths and seeing someone who wears dhoti as inferior has caught up with several indians badly.I am not not bothered about that . I am proud of what i am .


26. सूत्रक्रीड़ा / பொம்மலாட்டம்


सूत Thread क्रीड़ Game/show


Many sites list this as 'Art of thread magic blah blah blah'.They are not grasping the real meaning, i suppose.its the art of showing a story with a toy tied in a string and operating it from behind.    Know as marionette in English , this is an art that has very deep roots in various parts of India.Each part of India has its own variety and its flavor.I don't know much about north( i know it exist there though) , but this is prevalent in south India traditionally.The tanjore and nearby area  brahmins, are the only known sects to me that practice this even today in their family functions.It gives me immense pain in telling that this is one of the arts that is nearing extinction in tamilnadu which was otherwise widely practiced for centuries. Today's kids  are watching cartoon network , pogo , chutti TV etc.The reason is because we are not making it interesting for the kids.The mistake is with us.Writing this blog , i have shed light on this to myself.Zero at this now , i wish by heart to employ this as a way of entertaining my kids.



27. वीणाडमरुवाद्यानि /யாழ் இயல் , உடுக்கை அடித்தல் ,ஒலிநுட்ப அறிவு

 Veena is a stringed musical instrument..I don't need to explain about this in detail that this instrument plays an important role in carnatic music.You can Google to get more info.Shortly, There are various version of veena.Saraswathi veena is evolved from tanjore. Rudra veena is another famous one. Both these are used in hindustani and carnatic.Damarakum has evolved over time but its the instrument in siva's hand 'Udukkai' that has taken this shape i believe.So the  act of 'anantha thaandavam' / dance of passion with these musical instruments playing in background is what vatsyayana is mentioning , i suppose.I have never done this !!! 28. प्रहेलिका/ விடுகதை

Its a type of spoken parlor game that is practiced and descended  across generations.The art of making  statement or question or phrase having a double or veiled meaning, put forth as a puzzle to be solved is called RIDDLE.The art of making riddles have been passed on orally across generations in India This is practiced by many civilizations across the world.I used to play with riddles while  i was a child with friends , like many others.But i don't know how this is an art that has to be mastered!!! may i will try to make my own riddles as one of my future blog post.

Some websites try to explain this as antaakshari , but i doubt that way. The art of telling poetry with systematic arrangement of syllables and words is seen in any literature of a developed language.This art  , i can try , but mastering it need proficiency in the literature of a language.Mastering a language with high proficiency needs reading a lot of literature in that language.So this art , better is to to be tried at old age where the brain is rich with experience.I will sure try it once to write such stuffs.

30. दुर्वाचकयोगाः /அரியவை அறிதல்


This is the art of decrypting the difficult texts , is what i am doing right now by writing this blog!!! I score a six!! I want to read all the ancient text of Tamil and Sanskrit literature and decrypt on my own.I may commit error in understanding ,myself!! But you know that , to err is human. By errors , we learn. So i will learn them in due to course of time.

31. पुस्तकवाचनं /  கற்க கசடற



The art of reading books!! I score heavily here.I do think this should be mentioned as habit of reading books!! I have it . i score heavily here. I read a lot of books.In fact i have stacked the books that i have to read for the next two years.I am planning to build a library of my own with my favorite books when i build my home.This habit has to be inculcated among out children for their betterment.


32. नाटकाख्यायिकादर्शनम/ நாடகக்கலை

नाटका - drama , आख्यान - tale ,इतिहास - chronicle,दर्शनम- seeing

Enacting Ballad or Enacting on stage short plays and stories.Again i score !! Well , i haven't done this until my first job.But during that , i have shown enthusiasm and participated mainly due to the set of innovative people around.Again , obesity has restricted me to do a variety of stuff!! yet , i never looked back once i started!! With so many giants and so many people doing this, this might sound silly to mention about the small thing i did for a small period of time , but its big for me !!! A thing that i can show to my children with pride!!
