Throughout the life we traverse through different kind of people. People of different Religion, Gender, Color, Language, Nationality, ethnicity, political stance, sexual orientation, age etc
We crash and sail with them in the boat of life.
In my perspective a human is an object and all these are attributes of the human. I love when these attributes are seen with a good outlook.I hate when they are disgraced or criticized.
Religion:
The religion one follows may be their choice or inherited by birth. All religions are for the betterment of humanity and good living. These religions have their own distinctive style of dressing, faiths and mode of living. For example: wearing a turban, wearing a chador, worship by joining the palms, worship at a particular time etc. They must be respected and never be put on black shadows. I have seen people who have good respect for the neighbor who is of different religion. The neighbor near my home is a Christian. We give sweets to them on Diwali and they give plum cakes on Christmas. I have seen many people living in such harmony with each others irrespective of religion. But this is not the case with all. I have seen people who tell their children not to speak with the next door neighbor because they belong to different religion. Making provoking statements to someone of other religion is an act of a fool who never knows what is the meaning and essence of religion. In many work places,I have seen people of a religion forming a segregated group. But in schools/among children, this rarely happens. That's because GOD is in these children. May be we grow up to become devils :)Gender:
Respect and love for the other gender is a natural instinct. But tell me,how many husbands have passion at their heart for their wife or vice verse? How many people respect their opposite gender in workplace?
Criticizing/discriminating someone on their gender is one of prevalent happenings that we may notice in day to day life. I would say the fairer sex is more vulnerable to this. The girl child is mostly kept below par to the male in developing countries. She is prevented from basic education in the villages, higher education even in families in cities. These things have changed a lot in past two decades but it’s not out of the world yet. The fairer sex also faces many indirect discrimination in the work places (corporate, labor, public sectors). Some companies/institutes boasts that they are not biased on gender. But what happens inside is covered up and skeptical things that cant be proved. These kind of stories,I have heard from my friends and acquaintances. The male has mostly been dominant and that is also been passed on to the next generation.
Now the other side of the story. Many companies do provide paid maternity leaves for women. This period is longer than that is offered for men as paternity leave.Of course the physical pains and recovery the women goes through after childbirth is there. Thus the leaves granted for them are justified. No complaints regarding that. But for the men , to enjoy at least some days with their creation , they may need more leave than what is prevalent in the industries nowadays.
Talking about the two genders, I forgot to mention the third gender: hijras. The way the world treats them is mostly bad and branded in negative light. They could be seen in the traffic signals and shops as beggars. They are also easy target for prostitution. There are communities that invite hijras for occasions, as their presence is considered auspicious by them. But not all hijras get this privilege.
Fine, regarding the trans-gender: Biologically they belong to a single gender but emotionally to the opposite.Society mostly demeans men who are feminine like in their activities. This kind of person is ridiculed merciless in the societies. On contrary, a girl who drives a bike in a stylish way ,with a helmet and then reveals to be a girl at the end of an advertisement, by removing the helmet, is presumed to be glamorous. This again is the viewpoint of the male chauvinistic society.
Color:
The color of the skin is no way relevant to the content of the character. But yet we see much discrimination in this regards. Many of my friends opt only for a fair colored girl or fair colored boy as their partner. The darker women are even seen at some cases as potential target for illicit relations.I have also heard about similar case, but with a gender reverse to the situation mentioned in the previous statement, in western countries. I have also seen girls/boys in high school and colleges to be running after guys/girls who are fairer than the rest. If you drill down to villages, you could visibly see this kind of discrimination and caste system fuels the fire more.Mr. Sharukh khan jumps in a TV advertisement boasting a fairness cream that will make the men fairer. But the truth is,he has become richer. There are good actresses in Hollywood of the dark skin, but if you name some actresses in Indian film industry who are dark and have high fame, you can count them to be low.
Language:
This is a Tamil poem by bharathiyar insisting the harmony that he wishes to exists. He imagines singing sweet Telugu songs with cheran kingdom(present kerala) women, exchange the wheat of the mighty Ganges with
betel leafs cultivated around cauvery river. The lion-hearted Marathi poems are to be exchanged with the ivory of kerala.
This is one of the fore running views of millions of positive thinkers thinkers in present India. Lets throw some light at the negative part too.
The prevalence of language criticism is high in country like India where the states are actually divided based on language.
Once I heard a conversation between three people in a shop
Customer :
Shopkeeper:
An on-looker:
Please take the essence of the above conversation rather than any reference to Hindi or any other language. The above conversation was totally ridiculous. The shop keeper must have tried his best to converse in the language that the customer knows or tried to understand the customer. The onlooker should have kept his mouth shut. The essence of business is: facilitate the customer.
The minority group of a particular language in a state is mostly ridiculed if they converse with their own language mates in their mother tongue in front of the locals. It happens mostly among illiterates.
The worst is that, this some times happens with literates(Or civilized literates by education and Uncivilized tribal by bad socialization). There was once a highly educated person who has traveled across many parts of the world and seen many people (as said by him). We started a casual conversation on general topics.Gradually the topic started to circle around languages. He started to blast me off for not talking in the local language of the state. He was too blasphemous to say “being a Tamil you can’t talk in the local language because it’s in your blood”. I can’t start talking a new language from day one ,for the sake of being in the state. It takes time to grasp words and sentences of a language. The way he spoke was irritating for me to sit there with him. This is one of the occurrences I have faced.
The difference lies being a lover and a rational.A lover will value the presence of the mate every second but a rational, triggered by possessive character , will spoil the relationship in name of love. The lover is me and the mate is my language.i am lover not a rational toward my mother tongue.
Relating these to the previous gender/color topics, there is an interesting point to be noted. The discrimination are negligibly employed by the men towards a fair colored girl/woman. May be on seeing a ****y the entire blood flows into the ***k, hence the brain is deprived of blood and thinks less to criticize about anything. The ***k has the dictating power rather than the brain in these situations.
Nationality and Ethnicity:
Humans civilize, form societies in different parts of the world. The ethnicity is an attribute of birth and if it is seen with good eyes, then one will be proud be of the particular ethnicity. But when things go wrong and seen in negative,is when the problem arises. As I said earlier, I can’t write much more on this as I am not a globe trotter yet.
Political stance:
Sexual orientation:
Opposite poles attract: Thumb rule of nature
Same poles too attract: Overriding the Thumb rule of nature
The sexual orientation is one of the areas where the critics take a tough stance. One mostly supports the orientation that is possessed by he/she and the others are commented upon. Rarely one can find a person who has tolerance towards other sexual orientations in people. It’s insane to say you are a gay or lesbian in non-contemporary societies. The majority straight will make you a devil. If you are a bisexual then your probability of being targeted is severe too. Sexual orientation is an individual’s decision and mostly it is not respected.
Age:
When you are the youngest person to work with others, age is one of the constant weapons notified to overrule your standing. I hear them saying “You are younger than me. I have seen more things and I know better “.I will say it is one of the cheap weapons employed to hide their impotence
The other side is, when a group of young people work with an aged person.Especially when the aged person works on lower ranks than the younger ones. The older might be ridiculed of being carrying his/her weight and their old age is attributed as a reason of carrying around.
I have heard that these situations are highly prevalent in government offices.
I have mentioned mostly the negative parts that exist , not as a pessimist , but as a optimist who would like to identify the issues and uproot them.
Non tolerance is the root cause for all these. Whenever I am hit with any of these my tolerance level is tested. I pray I should always elevate my tolerance to avoid these crashes.

A very good analysis!
ReplyDeleteI agree totally. My father advised me when I was to stay away from home the first time - do not comment on five things (atleast in public) - region, religion, language and food habits.
I see from ur blog there is more to it... :-)
